In 2021 I started searching for my dream home. Being a single girl on one income, I didn't have many choices. Especially living in Tampa where the housing market was one of the highest housing markets in the country.
I needed more options to stay in my hometown!! So, as you probably know, Tiny homes have been becoming very popular. I absolutely fell in love with them. I searched and I searched every tiny home possibility, eventually I felt like I found my home: I found a local company to build my tiny home on wheels. It was going to be $150,000 (!!!) for 200 sq. ft. I had the contract and just needed to sign it.
But…. my gut feelings were telling me not to sign, and for some reason the tiny home on wheels did not feel right. As you know, internet searching can be exhausting and sometimes is a dead end, but eventually I found a YouTube video of a family that turned a shed into a home. Again, I loved the idea and felt this was even better than my earlier option, and I knew that’s what I wanted to do. I did more research until I found a portable shed website and started designing away. I was unsure and had no clue what I was doing.
A little help came my way when my brother Nathan attended our local State fair. He said he just bought a small shed there, and that they were giving a large discount if you ordered it that week. Needless to say I did not waste time getting there to see their samples in person. This would be a big decision for me not to get more input from my family, so I came back a couple days later with my father to get his opinion.
He also loved everything about it, and he saw my enthusiasm; he knew I had done my due diligence, so I ordered it that day … February 20, 2023!
I bought a 16 x 50 Gable Roof shed. I ordered it with one door, chose an all white exterior, with a black metal roof. The original cost was $26,240, the fair discount was $4,948 OFF! I also was paying for it in cash. (I have been saving for a down payment for a couple years by now) The FINAL cost was $21,292.
Once I ordered it, I knew that I needed to get the design concept going. I’m single with no kids, so I didn't need multiple rooms or a loft. I looked at websites and Pinterest for Ideas, but I couldn't find a layout that suited my ideas. Again, I found a website to assist me in my home building journey at homebyme.com for the design layout. I highly recommend using this as it benefited me by saving me so much time and gave me an outlet for my creativity. And even better, I was able to design my home for FREE! I was able to customize everything: I put in every dimension, wall, window, cabinets, fireplaces, porches, bedroom, and bathroom! You will also be able to see your design in 2D and 3D. There are so many design options and ideas to choose from on that website.
My Shed was delivered on May 17, 2023. The team that delivered it was great, actually amazing, because of the intricate maneuvers they did to take it from the delivery trailer to its resting spot. There were many concerns we had thought of. First, we knew the shed would not fit thru our front gates because of the shed’s dimensions, so we cut out a part of our fence on our side road instead of at the front of our property.
The driver had a forklift that’s called a Mule to remove the shed from the trailer; the mule also has an amazing turning radius; my video shows how many intricate turns and moves he made. Another concern we had was the turn to get into the new entrance — it would be very tight!
Something else that was a little nerve wracking for me was that he came right at the busy part of the day with a lot of traffic, but it turned out that he was so fast and efficient, and he had no problems. He parked my shed / future tiny home / cottage right on top of the crushed asphalt we had put down for its permanent purpose.
He then leveled it with blocks we bought earlier from Lowes. See below the entire process of the delivery!
Keep following a long to watch me transform this shed into a Lovely Cottage!! ❤️❤️
